Singer/Songwriter/Multi Instrumentalist Levon Helm passed away this week at 71 after a long battle with cancer. Naturally, the music community was shocked. Here’s some comments from prominent musicians.

Some of the unheard Kurt Cobain material may have surfaced, as a clip from “Hit So Hard: The Life And Near Death Story Of Patty Schemel” has been circulating the blogosphere. Wow, I’m really out of touch about movies. It seems Kid Cudi has some sort of involvement with Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project. Details here.

Also, Alan Cross looks at Sony’s latest new storage format here. It’s seems practical, but we’ll see if it ends up like the MiniDisc or BetaMax.

Upcoming Records

Metric have released some info about their new record ‘Synthetica’ – set to hit shelves June 12th. The group has decked out their official website with a bunch of cryptic information, including a bunch of short clips that likely preview what to expect. Spin Magazine has a good look at it as well.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a ‘new’ EP on the way. The collection of tunes showcases covers the band has recorded over the years and features both studio and live cuts. Any big fan probably has all this material, but it’s nice to have it in a neat little package. You can see the tracklisting here. (Finally, a practical use for a pre-release tracklisting.)

Nelly Furtado has a new record on the way. The vocalist tells the BBC that at 33, she feels old. More here.

Beck has contributed a killer cover “I Only Have Eyes For You” for visual arts project being put together in the states. You can hear the tune and read more about the art project here, (thanks Pitchfork) – they’ve also re-posted their interview with Beck from last year, where he discussed the transition between performing and producing and finding the balance. The Dandy Warhol’s have a new record out tomorrow, however, if you wanna hear it now, Rolling Stone has the Stream.
