Song Of The Day #16

Before you skip past this, let me just say this: I know this song continues to be overplayed. 20 years later, and yeah ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is nowhere close to the best song off of Nevermind. However, this version is worth watching for a couple of reasons.

1) The band is playing to a tape. A very rare occurrence in Nirvana history, in fact this may be the only one.

2) Kurt does sing, despite the tape playing in the background, and his interpretation of the lyrics of this song are awesome. As are the bands’ actions to support their song.

3) The historical context: This is from the hit show Top Of The Pops, one of the highest rated music shows in England, of it’s time. Subsequently, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was at the top of the charts at this time, making it a hotly anticipated performance.
