Death From Above 1979 – July 16, 2011
They Still Rock
Ottawa Bluesfest 2011 may always be remembered for god trying to kill Cheap Trick (and failing) but for me, it’ll be for the reunion tour of one of my favourite bands. Death From Above 1979 took the stage on a warm, clear evening and had the moderate-sized crowd in the palm of their hands.
As soon as the ambient noise of “Turn It Out” began to fill my ears, I knew I was in for something special. After seeing the band play in clubs and arenas, I was stoked to see how their sound would translate to the big stage at Bluesfest. Needless to say it worked. There were a few points where the band was a bit sloppy – which is to be expected for a group that has only played a handful of shows since breaking up in 2006, but in the end, they were as good as I remember them.
The songs were just as hard and fast as I remembered, the band was just as funny as they used to be
including Seb referring to Nick Jonas as the medium Jonas brother – then debating whether or not he was more attractive
and it makes me hope that their series of summer shows ends with a tip to the studio.
