Weekend News Roundup (July 23/11)

Kanye West and Jay-Z’s collaboration will be released August 1st. “Watch The Throne” is available for pre-order now and guest vocalists include LMFAO, Seal, Kid Cudi, Curtis Mayfield and Beyonce.

Google, the company that will eventually own the internet, has announced they will be live streaming two of this summers biggest festivals. You can catch all the live action, as well as a special backstage feed of both Lollapalooza & Austin City Limits. Waaaaay cheaper then going there.

Former half of Oasis, Noel Gallagher, has leaked some details about his new single. ‘The Death of You and Me’ will be released monday on his website “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds” will be out October 18th via his own label, Sour Mash

Tom Morello, the guitar hero you may remember from such seminal alternative bands as Rage Against The Machine & Audioslave has started a comic book series. The guitarist will also record a new song with each issue, which is to serve as the soundtrack. The first issue of “Orchid” will hit stores October 12th. Read more about it here. He brings his solo act, The Nightwatchman to Ottawa Folkfest August 27, appropriately enough, playing on the CUPE Stage.

The Mercury Prize Shortlist – recognizing the best in British music – has been announced. PJ Harvey seems to be the frontrunner, with Adele getting a fair bit of love. I’d like Tinie Tempah to win, but I just don’t see it. No word on what the standards for this award are, but to give you an idea, last year’s winner was The xx. Here are the nominees:

After nearly 2 years off, it looks like Bloc Party may be back. The English band has been on hiatus since 2009, but in a recent interview with NME, frontman Kele Okereke says there may be new stuff by the end of the summer!!! Read more Here

Metric is releasing their breakthrough album Fantasies later this year. The Delxue exition of “Fantasies Flashback” will include ten 7″ records, unrelease tracks, live & acoustic material, a poster, digital downloads, an MP3 player and a lovely box. It’s gonna cost about 70 bucks.

Here’s an idea, let’s use a song called Too Drunk To Fuck to help us sell booze. Stupid, right? Tell that to the people at Heineken

The 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” is rapidly approaching. To celebrate, Spin Magazine had put together a compilation of artists covering the tunes from that seminal album. Newermind is available for the cost of your email address at Their Facebook Page

Reggae Legend Little Roy has announced his new album will be called “Battle For Seattle” and will be a collection of – Nirvana covers. The record will be out September 5th, and includes covers of About A Girl, Lithium and the first single Sliver. Read the post Here.

Fresh off the heels of releasing their new EP, London, Ontario’s Two Crown King are coming back town. Their last show at The Observatory totally ruled, and August 5th at Zaphod’s should be no different!! I feel partially responsible for this one…
