The Balconies – Oct 27, 2011
I found myself at The LiVE Lounge once again tonight, to watch a great local band play their first hometown show in quite a while. Opening the show was Peterborough’s Birthday Boys, who’s style would be described as blusey-rock. Very high energy set from those guys. Good work ethic too, apparently I met the guy whos floor they were staying on.
The Birthday Girl
Next up was Ottawa’s own The Balconies. They played a great set, full of energy and high levels of musicianship. Better then to be expected on singer/guitarist Jacquie Neville’s 24th Birthday. Familiar songs like “Battle Royale” & “Serious Bedtime” sounded crisp and perfected. The band also showcased material from their upcoming LP. To keep with the decor of the room, (and really, the spirit of the Byward Market on this Thursday night) they dedicated their encore to playing covers. “Heart Of Glass” the Blondie classic, Madonna’s “True Blue” & Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” were interpreted in the style fans of the band would be used to. I wonder if this was an attempt to leave a lasting impression on new fans that may have found out about the band since their distribution deal with Audio Blood or just something playful to the viewers watching on The Ottawa Citizen’s new website, but it was cool. This show really wets my appetite for the new record I spoke of earlier (expected in 2012).
