The Album Drop

The Music Meltdown – February 26, 2012

So, following the backlash of the Grammys giving an award to convicted assult-er Chris Brown, the internet was lit-up yet again, when his ex-victim girlfriend Rihanna released a remix of one of her songs featuring Mr. Brown, and he did the same with one of his, and her vocals. Here’s an article that sheds some light onto why she’d ever do a song with him (and it’s not about the money).

[Update: It looks like the duo will appear together on American Idol, according to E!.]

Anyone wanna help me steal a street sign? (Note: That type of behavior is against the law, and is NOT endorsed by TheAlbumDrop [but it would get a retweet]) Kingston, Ontario City Council barely passed a motion this week to rename a block of Barrack Street after local heroes The Tragically Hip. In this article you can read about the debate to rename the street, and what little information we have about their new record(!!!!).

Jimmy Fallon does a killer Eddie Vedder impression. I can’t seem to embed it, so Click here to check out “Jeremy (Lin)”

It's not often that Fred Durst is the successful one in a picture

Apparently, the braintrust at Ca$h Money Records need A&R people. If they had any, they would tell them how stupid it was to sign Limp Bizkit to a record contract. The perennial critic’s punching bag released their last album last year (to little fanfare), and no future release dates have been announced. More info here.

Speaking of no-talent hacks, lets hope this is the thing that gets Paris Hilton to stop trying to be a musician. The multimillionaire socialite/reality TV star doesn’t seem to get it. She released a single last week, and after getting Lit up on the Blogosphere, she pulled it. Do not fear, as Ironically named Blogger Perez Hilton has the tune on his site. I’ve heard the argument that “any press is good press” but in rebuttal to that, Paris says it better than I ever could:

Universal Music’s impending takeover of the music industry may have hit a bump this week, as the group has filed with the European Commission to take over the assets of EMI. Experts believe the deal will set to nearly monopolize the business, and that those in power at the EU will not allow it. More information is available here, and we’ll keep an eye on it for ya!

Just in case you had any doubts about a new Bloc Party record, the group has confirmed some festival dates in Europe this summer. In the post on NME, the group says they will showcase some new tunes at these shows.

Yesterday would have been George Harrison’s 69th birthday. Many considered the late musician to have been “The Cool Beatle” and in case you had any doubt, read this.

Time to buy a new hard drive. Legendary British DJ John Peel is working on a project that will see his extensive record collection digitized, and archived online.

Polyvinyl Records is having a ‘Buy 1/Get 1 Free’ sale at their online store. You can pick up back catalog items from artists like Japandriods, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltzen, Aloha, of Montreal and many more. The last time I ordered from them, they also threw some candy into the package. Will they do something like that for you? There is only one way to find out…

Here’s a great article about audio files being “Mastered For iTunes”.

Upcoming Releases

Metric have announced a new record. ‘Synthetica’ will be released June 12 (in North America, ask your stores for international release dates), once again self-released by the band and distributed across the world in a manor that should make it easy to find in your local record store. I would expect a single in the next 4-6 weeks. Emily Haines posted a wonderful letter, giving some insight into what the group has been up to lately, on their website, and I’ve isolated this album “preview”

Muse has Tweeted (@MUSE) some grainy cell-phone photos from their current recording session in L.A. The record is to have a large orchestral component, including brass and string sections. It’s set for release in the Fall.

Propagandhi has announced a new record. As far as information goes, the Canadian Punkers have only said to expect something to arrive late summer, and details will follow. Good enough for me. (Thanks Exclaim!)

The Melvins have a bunch of new material on the way. An EP distributed by car manufacturer Scion, ‘The Bulls & The Bees’ will hit the internet in March. You can read more about their upcoming album, split EP and contributions a collection here.

Here’s something you may not be able to get out of your head, Kylie Minogue says she should have a new record in 2013. NME has the details.

New Music

Montreal’s Plants & Animals have their much-anticipated record coming out on Tuesday. However, if you can’t wait until then to hear it, you should thank the good people at Paste Magazine for posting it.

Gorillaz have posted a new track, featuring Andre 3000 (Outcast) & James Murphy (Formerly of LCD Soundsystem) called DoYaThing. The tune is a collaborative effort with Converse, and comes in two forms. There is the single mix, which you can stream or download at Converse’s Website and the 13 Minute Extended Mix. Enjoy!

Looking for an excuse to join an online streaming service like Rdio? Here’s a good one. Deer Tick’s new EP ‘Tim’ (set to come out this coming Tuesday) is streaming there now. This Article explains that this EP is a bunch of B-sides from the sessions for their 2011 album Divine Providence, and has the link to the Rdio playlist, featuring these tunes.

Here’s a killer record from Vancouver’s Heavy Steps, which sees the duo encompass a variety of lo-fi sounds, and is worth the 35 minutes it asks of your ears. It’s streaming below:

L.A. based of Verona were supposed to drop a new record earlier this year. It’s done, but I feel like it’s been held up due to an impending major label deal. Check out a new tune, “Centipede” on their Reverb Nation page and remember who told you about them first.

Two Ottawa-based bands collide as Fevers takes Sound Of Lions tune “Enders” to a whole new level. Check it:

Another killer local band is Crusades. Check out their new video for “Attic” below.
